So you just got a tattoo
It is very important to properly care for your new lifetime investment. The last thing you probably feel like doing is going back in and having your tattoo redone because all the color faded out, there are spots missing from scabbing. You may already be behind on the rent from this tattoo, so why pay for it twice. Here is a care plan that works extremely well to help the healing and maintain the vibrant color of a fresh tattoo:
1: Keep the bandage/wrap on for at least one hour after your session. This will help the tattoo start the healing process by allowing the body to stop all the bleeding, but not letting the fresh tattoo to dry out. If possible, it is recommended to remove the bandage before 4 hours after (see step 2).
2:It is very important to thoroughly clean your tattoo after the bandage/wrap is removed. Residual ink and gunk causes thick, color-removing scabbing when it dries, so by removing all the crud, your tattoo can properly heal. To clean: use a light anti-bacterial soap (Dial, etc). Pat your tattoo lightly with soap and rinse with your hand using warm water. Sometimes you may need to lightly wipe away heavy pieces of crud. This is okay to do, but do not scrub your fresh tattoo. Now some may think "but it burns...", your tattoo already hurts from the session, washing your tattoo is not any more painful and by doing so, it will heal so much better, and faster!
3:After washing, apply antibiotic ointment (Bacitracin works best). This will help keep the tattoo free from infection, plus keep it slightly moisturized from it's cleaning. Do NOT apply Aloe Vera based products or Neosporin!
4:Moisturize every 3 to 4 hours with UNSCENTED hand lotion (such as Curel). Scented lotions may burn your tattoo! By moisturizing, this will keep scabbing to a minimum and prevent cracking of scabs that do form. It is best to wear loose fitting clothing over the area of your tattoo.
TIP:For the first 3 days, lightly wash in the morning and apply Bacitracin. Moisturize throught the day with hand lotion and apply Bacitracin before going to sleep. After the 3rd morning, Bacitracin is not needed, use hand lotion regularly until completely healed.
5:Your tattoo should be fully healed after 2 weeks. All the scabs should be gone after the 1st week.
6:Do NOT pick at your tattoo!
7:Do not expose your tattoo to sunlight for the first 2 weeks. After that, apply sunblock to prevent ultraviolet rays from fading your tattoo.
8:Do NOT pick at your tattoo!
